enable quick system copying; accelerate upgrades and
changes; and provide simplified, economical, and highly
accessible disk-based archiving. The three key NetApp
capabilities — support and update, protect and repair, and
upgrade — align with the application life cycle (see Figure
1). Let’s walk briefly through each capability.
The NetApp application lifecycle management suite
equips SAP project teams with data management capabilities that support growing and changing development,
quality assurance, and production environments. The
NetApp system cloning process makes it easy to create
SAP system copies on demand in a few minutes, with an
automatic SAP system ID change and without affecting
the source system. Each cloned system is an autonomous,
transparent, virtual copy that can be used to perform parallel development, testing, conversions, and upgrades, or
to provide copies of SAP systems for training environments. Storage requirements for a system copy are typically ;0% or less than the size of the source database.
A significantly streamlined cloning process allows
more testing cycles, dramatically reducing the risk of
problems and unplanned downtime. In addition, fast creation of multiple SAP system copies provides more current data to more people for production support,
development, testing, and training activities.

increasing data volumes and the potential impact of
backup activities on production systems. NetApp backup,
recovery, and archiving capabilities offer efficient, reliable
processes for protecting SAP systems in development, testing, and production environments. The advanced data
protection capabilities NetApp offers help ensure up to
99.999% data availability for SAP systems.
Using NetApp Snapshot technology, storage administrators can create SAP system backups in seconds.
NetApp also provides key advantages for restore and
recovery operations. SAP teams can use Snapshot copies
in conjunction with clones to diagnose and resolve system issues and apply those corrections to the production
environment. They can also restore the entire SAP database to a prior Snapshot copy within minutes.
Any upgrade, migration, Unicode conversion, or business
function change requires making several SAP system copies. With the NetApp application lifecycle management
suite, teams can create SAP system copies quickly with
minimal space requirements for efficient upgrades and
enhancement pack and support pack administration.
Upgrade teams can also perform more parallel testing
using the same or a lower amount of time and resources,
thus reducing overall business risk. NetApp cloning and
backup processes provide flexibility and remove barriers
to scheduling shared resources data. The NetApp solutions also minimize upgrade downtime and enable
upgrade executions within tight upgrade windows.
ALM Today and Tomorrow
Today, the NetApp application lifecycle management suite
is helping companies reduce cost and complexity, minimize
risk, and gain competitive advantage. Companies are also
learning that they can leverage the processes established
using the NetApp application lifecycle management suite
to develop cloud-based SAP infrastructures that can transform their SAP environments and their bottom lines.
Other significant outcomes of the NetApp and SAP
partnership, such as the NetApp FlexPod solution, employ
proven virtualization technologies to simplify the evolution to shared and cloud infrastructures for SAP customers. Moving forward, SAP and NetApp will continue to
deliver integration and innovation to SAP customers in
driving highly efficient application life cycles — and in
building dynamic, virtualized SAP infrastructures for
today’s and tomorrow’s cloud computing environments.
